Concept Overview

The "Dracula: Classic Reboot" project aims to revive Bram Stoker's classic horror novel "Dracula" through a contemporary yet immersive presentation. This reboot acts as a "movie trailer" for the book, designed to entice readers with a tantalizing glimpse into the story. The format chosen for this project is an evidence folder, which aligns with the investigative and mysterious nature of the narrative.

Folder Design

The folder is crafted from natural, light brown paper stock, exuding an antique feel that complements the novel's setting in the late 19th century. The string closure, a classic mechanism, not only adds to the historical authenticity but also features two red pins that mimic vampire fang marks. This subtle yet evocative detail immediately sets the tone for the contents, hinting at the vampiric elements within.

Contents and Their Rationale

Evidence Card

An evidence card is placed at the top of the folder’s contents, providing a detailed overview of the enclosed items and setting the tone for the whole publication. Without this card, the publication risked feeling too disjointed and confusing. The evidence card sets the mystery scene right from the moment the viewer opens the enclosure, effectively framing the narrative and ensuring a cohesive experience for the reader.

Diary Pages

The folder includes five diary pages that encompass the first 1500 words of "Dracula." The text is presented in a script-style font that simulates handwriting from the era, using a deep red color reminiscent of blood—a nod to the novel's vampiric theme. The roughened edges and dark brown twine binding enhance the authenticity, making the pages appear as if they are genuine artifacts from the time the story is set.

The use of diary entries is particularly fitting as Stoker’s narrative is structured through journal entries, letters, and newspaper clippings, immersing the reader in a personal and fragmented storytelling method. This format also underscores the investigative nature of the plot, as the characters document their experiences and discoveries about Dracula.

Polaroids and Film Strips

Six polaroids and two film strips, showing the same images, are included to provide visual stimuli that anchor the reader in the story’s setting and events. These images include:

A wolf: Representing Dracula's ability to transform into a wolf, symbolizing his supernatural powers.

A graveyard: Evoking the novel’s gothic atmosphere and the theme of death.

A dead woman: Hinting at the novel's horror elements and Dracula’s victims.

An old street: The Image of an old street featuring horse and carriages sets the time period for the publication.

Two images of Castle Dracula: Establishing the primary setting and the source of the novel’s dread.

A close-up of bite marks on a neck: Directly linking to the vampire lore central to the story.

These images serve as visual "evidence" within the narrative, reinforcing key themes and elements of the story. The choice of polaroids, despite being anachronistic, adds a tangible, contemporary feel that bridges the historical and modern-day elements of the reboot.

Historic Map of Transylvania

A historic map of Transylvania grounds the story geographically, providing context for Dracula’s origins and the journey the characters undertake. This map not only enhances the historical authenticity but also serves as a visual aid that helps readers trace the characters' movements and Dracula's domain.

Overall Aesthetic and Impact

The evidence folder’s tactile and visual elements are designed to engage readers on multiple sensory levels. The aged look of the items, combined with the evocative imagery and handwritten text, creates a sense of uncovering a hidden past. This immersive approach is intended to spark curiosity and intrigue, persuading readers to delve into the full novel.
